Cultivating The Skill Of Hearing God's Voice

One of the most meaningful practices in my life with God has been learning to slow down long enough to listen. Hearing God’s voice is not something reserved for a few spiritually gifted people. It is part of the relationship God invites all of us into. Like any relationship, it grows with time, attention, and practice.

Many of us move through life at a pace that makes listening difficult.

Our thoughts are crowded with responsibilities, conversations, worries, and plans for tomorrow. In that kind of internal noise, it can be hard to recognize the gentle ways God speaks.

Learning to hear Him often begins with something very simple: stillness.

When we quiet our hearts before the Lord, we create space to notice His presence and receive what He wants to share. This is not about striving or trying to force an experience. It is about positioning ourselves with humility and trust.

Journal Prompt: Lord Will You Speak To Me? Learning to Hear God's Voice

One of my favorite journaling prompts has become a simple prayer:

Lord, will you speak to me about the next three months?

That question creates room for God to bring perspective, encouragement, correction, or direction. Sometimes what comes is very practical. Sometimes it is simply a reminder of who He is and who we are in Him.

When I sit down to journal with that question, I try to approach the moment with a few intentional steps.

First, I still my inner being. This means setting aside the urge to rush or immediately start writing. I take a few quiet moments to breathe and remember that God is present. He does not need to be persuaded to speak. He is already attentive to us.

Second, I turn my attention and affection toward the Lord. Listening to God is not just a mental exercise. It is relational. I remind myself that I am coming to the One who knows me completely and loves me deeply.

Third, I trust that He has something to say. This step matters more than we might realize. If we assume God is silent or uninterested in speaking, we approach the moment with doubt rather than expectation. Trust opens the door to receiving.

Finally, I begin to write what comes to mind as I sit with Him. Sometimes it is a Scripture that surfaces in my thoughts. Sometimes it is a gentle impression or a phrase that seems to carry weight. Over time I have learned not to dismiss these moments too quickly. God often speaks in quiet ways.

Hearing God’s voice is not usually dramatic.

More often it is steady and relational, unfolding over time as we continue to walk with Him.

Like any skill, listening grows through practice. The more we return to the Lord with openness, the more familiar His voice becomes. We begin to recognize His character in what we hear—His kindness, His wisdom, His patience.

If you have never tried a journaling practice like this, you might begin with that same simple question:

Lord, will you speak to me about the next three months?

Then take a moment to quiet your heart, turn your attention toward Him, and trust that He is near.

God is not distant from those who seek Him. Often, He is simply waiting for us to slow down long enough to listen.
